Officially founded on 8th August 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was born out of the initiative of the Philippines Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, in order to foster the political and economic cooperation in the region and to create an entity capable of guaranteeing stability throughout the whole Southeast Asia. With the progressive enlargement of its membership to Brunei (1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos and Myanmar (1997) and Cambodia (1999), the ASEAN has become an inclusive and representative forum in a region which was destined, in the following decade, to grow into one of the most dynamic contexts of the world.
